On October 29, 1995, Tanzania held its first democratic elections—peacefully. Named Tanganyika after World War I when it was acquired by Britain, the country gained its independence in 1961. In 1963, it was joined by nearby Zanzibar Island, and the two formed the nation of Tanzania. According to the findings of the Leakeys, Tanzania may well be the spot where humankind was born. WEATHER AND CLIMATEThe ideal safari adventure climate.

Located just south of the equator at 5,000 feet above sea level, northern Tanzania has generally spring-like weather year—round with low humidity. Even in the warmest season, temperatures rarely reach above 80° F, and the dry heat is comfortable.
There are three main climatic areas in Tanzania: the coastal area, the central plateau area, and the highland areas. In the narrow coastal area and the immediate hinterland, conditions are tropical with temperatures averaging 80°F. Humidity is relatively high and annual rainfall varies from 40 to 76 inches. The central plateau area, which constitutes most of the country, is warm and dry with temperatures varying considerably according to seasonal conditions. Annual rainfall in this area is between 20 to 30 inches. The highland areas are semi-temperate and cool and are grouped into various sections. The Pare and Usambara ranges are located in the northeast while the Livingstone Mountains are found in the southwest. Mt. Kilimanjaro, in the north, is the world's largest free—standing mountain and the highest mountain in Africa at 19, 340 ft.
