In 1909 Teddy Roosevelt journeyed to East Africa with an entourage of society friends and there undertook a journey that would forever alter the world’s perception of luxury travel at its ultimate. Replete with collapsible canvas bathtubs, custom-made bed linens, exotic safari outfits and equipment, vintage wines, and elegant table fittings, the party set out with 500 porters to transport and service the needs of this exclusive group in their quest to conquer the bush in elegance and luxury.
It was then that the concept of the tented camp was born, an elaborate combination of exotic African adventure and European civility and comfort. Day 1
Arrival Nairobi, Kenya | The Norfolk
On arrival at the airport. An awaiting SHRIKE representative accompanies you to the elegant The Norfolk. The lodge has been hosting naturalists and safariers since 1904. The old photos of famous past travelers like Churchill and Teddy Roosevelt will remind you ...this is where grand adventures begin.
Day 2 & 3
Masai Mara | Cottar’s 1920 Camp
The Mara is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. And tonight, we delight in a luscious meal at this exceptional camp, Cottar’s 1920 Camp. The camp was established by Calvin and Louise Cottar. Calvin’s great-grandfather was an American who, inspired by Teddy Roosevelt’s hunting exploits, moved to Kenya in 1911 and established Cottar’s Safari Services. The rest is history —more than 100 years of it.

Ngorongoro Crater | The Highlands

Farewell Lunch | Fly Back Home
We fly to Arusha this morning. A dayroom has been reserved at Arusha Coffee Lodge for our comfort while we enjoy a final day to shop or revisit a favorite site. Later this evening we proceed to the airport.

What is the best time to come on this safari?
There is no best time, each season has its own special features. Safari in the rainy season [April—May, and October—November] and the landscape is beautifully green, the dust has settled and there are fewer guests on safari. The grass is fertile and tall which makes the spotting game more challenging but rewarding. The rain will mainly fall during the night. The remainder of the year is called the dry season, when there is less water available so animals tend to congregate around the water sources, making game spotting easier. High season attracts more guests on safari specifically from June to September.
How many participants per departure?
In keeping with our commitment to personalized service and exclusive arrangements, the Shrike Specialty safaris are always small and intimate in size—carefully crafted to avoid any “big-group” feeling. Groups vary from as few as 4 guests [and what service!] to an average of 6 and not more than 12 participants ...believed to be the smallest group in the industry. Our safari vehicle accommodates no more than six guests.
Can I transform this trip into a private safari?
We easily customize this safari into an exclusive, fully Private Safari, with you and your family, or a group of friends with your own safari guide. A private vehicle will be yours for all game drives and tours—a lovely feature! Please ask for this option upon booking...
I am lactose intolerant/ require gluten—free meals/ allergic to peanuts/ vegan. Can you cater for this?
Yes, the chefs at each lodge have been specially trained to deal with many different types of dietary requirements. They will personally discuss your upcoming meals with you. Please also be sure to notify us of dietary requirements when making your booking.
What if I need serious medical attention while on safari?
As a local tour operator, we can recommend the best physicians. However, in more remote locations of Tanzania, you are assured of the services of the Flying Doctors—a group of well-qualified physicians who travel by aircraft throughout the bush to provide treatment and transportation. This assures Shrike guests of prompt medical attention and air transportation in the unlikely event that an emergency should arise.
How do I book this safari?
The unique appeal of this safari is the exclusive nature of hand-picked accommodations which can fill up quickly, particularly in high season, it is recommended to book at least 90 days in advance, most of our guests book 6 months to 1 year in advance. A deposit in the amount of 25% of your per—person trip price will hold your space. Credit and Debit Cards including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, PayPal, and Discover are accepted.
