Herds As Far As Your Eyes Can See...

Experience the wonder and immensity of the Great Migration on the vast plains of the Serengeti—witness great numbers of wildebeest calves being born within the space of a few weeks.
This safari has been designed with the aim of witnessing the Great Migration during the calving season. At the beginning of the short rainy season end of October, the herds of wildebeest start arriving at the short-grass plains of the Serengeti around early November. The short-grass plains are located in the area east and south of the Seronera-the heart of the Serengeti, around the Ndutu area and the northern Ngorongoro Conservation area. Huge herds of wildebeest and zebra can easily be seen roaming around the plains as they feed on the green pastures. It has been recorded that more than 200,000 calves of wildebeest are born during the first two weeks of February.
They normally stay in the area till early April and later start heading west towards the Grumet River and Musabi plains in the Western Corridor of the Serengeti National Park. To witness that calm rhythm of life revives our worn souls and recaptures a feeling of belonging to the natural world. No one can return from the Serengeti unchanged, for tawny lions will forever prowl our memory and great herds throng our imagination...

What is the best time to come on this safari?

The best time to witness the Great Migration is between July to mid-October, during the dry season. There is less water available so animals tend to congregate and cross the Mara River, making game spotting easier. High season attracts more guests on safari specifically from the end of June to early October.

  • 2

    How many participants per departure?

In keeping with our commitment to personalized service and exclusive arrangements, the Shrike Specialty safaris are always small and intimate in size—carefully crafted to avoid any “big-group” feeling. Groups vary from as few as 4 guests [and what service!] to an average of 6 and not more than 12 participants ...believed to be the smallest group in the industry. Our safari vehicle accommodates no more than six guests.

Can I transform this trip into a private safari?

We easily customize this safari into an exclusive, fully Private Safari, with you and your family, or a group of friends with your own safari guide. A private vehicle will be yours for all game drives and tours—a lovely feature! Please ask for this option upon booking...

Yes, the chefs at each lodge have been specially trained to deal with many different types of dietary requirements. They will personally discuss your upcoming meals with you. Please also be sure to notify us of dietary requirements when making your booking.

What if I need serious medical attention while on safari?

As a local tour operator, we can recommend the best physicians. However, in more remote locations of Tanzania, you are assured of the services of the Flying Doctors—a group of well-qualified physicians who travel by aircraft throughout the bush to provide treatment and transportation. This assures Shrike guests of prompt medical attention and air transportation in the unlikely event that an emergency should arise.
